By Craig Purcell and Paul Gadbois/Tri-County Newspapers

Spartans hand PV its first loss
Avery dominates Vikings and R.B. offense collects huge hits
By Leland Gordan - Record Searchlight

Many have been in awe of the dominant start to the season posted by the Pleasant Valley High baseball team.  Don't dare put Red Bluff High's team in that group.  The Spartans were the aggressors from the start and showed no signs of intimidation in Friday's 5-1 victory in an Eastern Athletic League blockbuster that took place on a spectacular day. They sprinted out to a 3-0 lead and never gave the visitors from Chico any chance of getting back in the contest.

Coaching quotes:

*Reciprocating to the hard work and loyalty of your players breeds championships.

*Anyone can coach great players, but only "good" coaching can develop players into great players.

*It is the average hard working players that are the glue that create winning teams, not the "star" player.

*Show me a coach that yells at his players to get their attention and I'll show you a team where the players pay no attention to the coach.

Rebels play well in Chico tournament, but still struggle to bring in the wins

Rebels lose 6-3 to Foothill.  Gerald Baker pitched a great game, well enough to win giving up only 1 earned run - Rebels were plagued with errors.

Rebels lose 7-5 to Reno.  Playing well enough to win, a couple of untimely miscues keep the Rebels from the win column. E.J. Stanton goes 3 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI, Joel Duggins goes 2 for 4, Trey Samons goes 2 for 3 with a double and Zane Medeiros hit a double in the loss.

Rebels beat the tough Eureka Falcons 3-2.  Coach Lish sends E.J. Stanton on a straight steal of home plate, which E.J. executed perfectly, for the win.  Stephen Jenson gets the win on the mound pitching a 2 hitter.  Stanton 2 for 4, Cameron Vietti 1 for 2 with a double and Gerald Baker 1 for 1.

In the last game, the Rebels lost to Grass Valley by a score of 9-3.  Once again the error monster raised its ugly head.  The Rebels struggled throughout the game with miscues and mis-reads on defense.  Cameron Vietti went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI's and a homerun, E.J. Stanton went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a run scored. Zane Medeiros went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Rebels win one lose two in Eureka

In game #1 the Rebels must have left their playing legs in their cars as they were defeated 14-4.  Playing against a more experienced team the Rebels struggled for most of the game and the Rebels pitching just couldn't find a strike that the Eureka Falcons didn't turn into a hit.  Gerald Baker pitched the first 4 innings and Cody Fox pitched the last two - Baker charged with the loss.  At bat Cody Fox was 2 for 2 with a double, scoring two runs for the Rebels, Cameron Vietti went 3 for 3, also scoring 2 runs for the Rebels, and E.J Stanton was 2 for 3 with a double.

In game #2 the Rebels battled through 5 innings of a 2-2 tie.  Cameron Vietti pitched 5 innings giving up just 4 hits but had to leave the mound due to his "pitch count".  Zane Medeiros came in relief and pitched well enough for the win but errors made behind and some well timed hits gave the Falcons the victory winning by a score of 6-2.  Joel Duggins went 2 for 3.

In game # 3, a scheduled 9 inning match, E.J. Stanton started on the hill for the Rebels.  E.J. worked hard but the Falcons proved to be up for the task.  In the forth Stephen Jenson came in to pitch the remainder of the game (6 innings).  Stephen pitched a great game giving up just 4 hits and striking out 6, walking only one batter.  The Rebels defense tightened up and their bats woke up from its slumber recovering from a 6 run deficit (behind 7-1) as the Rebels went on to win the game by a score of 12-8 behind some stellar defensive plays and some creative calls from the coaching box.  Jordan Fox went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's, E.J. Stanton went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's, Stephen Jenson helped out the cause by going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored, Danny Vietti was 1 for 1 with an RBI that produced the Rebels first score of the game and Trey Samons went 2 for 5 with a double.

The Rebels will play again next week in the Chico Fall Classic (10/3), first game is at 9:00 AM at Chico High School VS Foothill.

Sept 24-2009

Bulls win in Redding!

After nearly four hours and nine innings of baseball, the Red Bluff Bulls left Tiger Field with an 11-10 win over the Redding Rattlers. The last 5 minutes almost provided the runs needed for more baseball.  After Redding plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Piercy had the bases loaded and the tying run on second base but grounded a ball to Red Bluff second baseman [Zane Medeiros]. [Medeiros] flipped to [E.J.Stanton] [over to Cody Fox at first] and the Bulls executed a flawless double play to earn the victory. Sunday's hitting clinic was excellent!!  Bob Anderson did a VERY good job with the group that was in attendance and for everyone there it is was of great benefit.  The group was relatively small, but everyone left feeling like they learned something (including the coaches).  It is unfortunate that many of the players currently playing missed out on such a golden opportunity.  I'm sure these guys will remember the 5 basic steps of good hitting....thanks Bob

March 12-2009

Last Sunday's pitcher/catcher clinic was another success.  Mike Goff, AJ Ampi (pitching coaches) and Scott Hogan (catching coach) worked with the players for about 2 hours.  A lot of very good information was given to the players in attendance.  We had players in attendance from Little League age through High School/American Legion age. Rob Shoff who was scheduled to work with the catchers had a family emergency the prevented him from attending.  On March 29th we will be holding our 2nd clinic - Hitting and Base-running.  1:00 PM at the High School baseball field.
